COVER: Has Klein missed the boat?
Alberta lone Western miser
1999-09-16

As Alberta students return to class this week they will face the third highest tuition fees in the country, according to Statistics Canada. Meanwhile, the Alberta government is predicting an enormous and growing $1.9 billion surplus. This has student leaders and opposition MLAs across the province calling for tuition relief. They point out that provincial neighbours--east and west--are moving toward tuition freezes and reductions rather than continued increases.

"Given that there is such a large surplus, there is absolutely no reason to continue underfunding post-secondary education," said NDP Education critic Raj Pannu.

History proves APEC protesters correct
1999-09-16

From the Editors - Ever since the Prime Minister committed peace keepers to East Timor, I've been starting to think that those APEC protesters may have had a point.

You remember APEC don't you? The Asian Pacific Economic Conference and the resulting scandal that held our nation's fickle attention for a few shining months (give or take a few) almost two years ago.

New logo, new clothes, new slogan
1999-09-16

In a much-hyped press conference on Tuesday, the University of Calgary Athletics Department unveiled a two-pronged attack on the apathetic student body and public. Teaming with the Calgary Herald, the department revealed new jerseys as well as a revamped web page. After casting aside my initial disappointment at not seeing Rex (our official mascot for those not well-versed in Dinos sports) tripping over some wires and falling on his face, I quickly grew fond of the new uniforms. I was even more enthusiastic when I found out that the university was not spending my tuition on them.

"The new Dinos uniforms and much of the upcoming promotions are being made possible by the Calgary Herald partnership with the U of C," said U of C President Terry White.

Massively modern martini media montage
1999-09-16

The modern person is supposed to embrace modern art. They should fully comprehend chaos, beauty and angst, and the wonderful ways these entities can be intertwined to create a complete picture. The more contrasting emotions involved in a piece, the better. And at the last curtain call, if the modern person is not thoroughly confused, they are probably sleeping.

Screaming Fish was a dance/theatre/ video event created and choreographed by Nicole Mion. Divided into two parts, Screaming Fish offered audiences a dialogue-free dance film called The Road Project and a live dance performance focusing upon the ins and outs of "hip martini bar culture."

The Torrington Gopher Hole Museum:
What is it they say about death increasing one's notoriety?
1999-09-16

Torrington, Alberta (pop. 192) is an idyllic prairie town an hour northeast of Calgary. Surrounded by rolling grassland, it has the typical small town amenities; a nondescript post office, hair salon, restaurant, and general store with one rusty gas pump.

It has also generated a fantastic amount of controversy over the last four years due to the presence of the Torrington Gopher Hole Museum.
