Student services told to move
Nat Christie Disability Centre, others, given little notice
2001-03-15

Some student services want a little more input before they're told they have to move.

The Disabled Students' Centre and International Students Centre relocation is necessary since Campus Security is scheduled to move to the southwest corner of MacEwan Students Centre. The DRC will most likely end up in the area facing the Renert Centre.

King Ralph's graceless coronation
2001-03-15

Column - Drunk on power and high on his horse, Ralph Klein blissfully strode to the podium. As he spoke, all class and dignity people may have accorded him vanished in a flurry of slurs and insults.

The now infamous "welcome to Ralph's world" kicked off a 20-minute ramble that was at times incoherent and, between his giggles and far too pregnant pauses, cutting, cruel and painfully unprofessional. Upon hearing of his triumph and of the thunderous collapse of the Liberals, Klein's arrogance and abhorrence for common courtesy took centre stage, granting all Albertans a glimpse of the man he truly is.

Doan and the dinos get bronzed
Disappointing loss to Regina atoned for in victory over Queens
2001-03-15

It's March, and as any basketball fan knows, that means that it's time for March Madness. No, not NCAA, we're talking about the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union. Yep, our very own University of Calgary women earned a spot to participate in Nationals for the second straight year. The Dinos represented the Canada West Conference as the third seed in an eight-team tournament that put them up against the sixth-ranked Dalhousie Tigers. This is a single-elimination competition which means every game is a must-win situation.

The U of C did not want to take the Tigers lightly so they went into the game with a lot of confidence in their ability--but they were by no means cocky. The Dinos were right to expect a good game as they took a two-point lead into the locker room for half time. Natalie Hudec was the spark plug from the perimeter as she went three-for-three from long range during the game to end up with 11 points and Leighann Doan was unstoppable throughout the game as she paced the Dinos to a 74-67 victory over the Tigers while pouring in 28 points and pulling down 11 boards. Anna Bekkering gave a solid performance as she chipped in 11 points and four assists.

Wannabe Mozarts get chance at fame
2001-03-15

Orchestra music brings to mind long dead middle-aged white males with unruly hair. The chance to see an orchestra play anything but Mozart, Chopin or Beethoven is a rarity. Here at the University of Calgary, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra will give students a chance to hear something different when the CPO performs a read (a practice) of students' work.

Rarely do up-and-coming composers get to hear their work played by a full world-class orchestra; all they know is what they have written on the page and what they can imagine in their minds. Not only is this performance free to enjoy, it is also free for the student composers. The fee for an orchestra of 60 is almost impossible for new composers to afford.

Linux at the U of C
A gentle introduction to Linux
2001-03-15

Linux was created by univer-sity student Linus Torvalds in 1991 and can be thought of a Unix work-alike for smaller personal computers.

In a personal computer, Linux, like the Windows operating system found in most PCs, acts as the interface between software programs and computer hardware. That is, Linux is responsible for passing data back and forth between applications like Netscape and hardware like a modem.
