DISCOURSES ON TERROR
Campus religious leaders offer diverse multi-faith perspectives and insights on September 11 terrorist attacks
2001-10-11

"Religion was not created to put up borders."

Eight words spoken by Sikh Students' Association representative Manmeet Bhullar captured the spirit of the Dialogue on Terrorism held on Thurs., Oct. 4 at the University of Calgary. Organized by several religious student groups, it featured speakers raising awareness about religious issues surrounding the terrorist acts of September 11.

Ever after
2001-10-11

Editorial - Exactly one month has passed since the day forever seared into our memories. It is undeniable that the world is very different from the one we knew. It is dawning on us that a war against terrorism's constant threat is necessary and justified, given what has recently transpired.

In the latest chapter of an unfolding terrorist threat, officials evacuated an entire Montreal office building because an envelope--a single innocuous envelope--may have been contaminated with anthrax. The envelope apparently came all the way from Florida, where a man died in what may have been a terrorist attack using the deadly bacteria. The facts surrounding this incident are still unclear at this time. Nonetheless, Floridians still cleared pharmacies of anti-anthrax antibiotics anyway, a phenomenon likely duplicated elsewhere.

The wheels fall off in Manitoba
Dinos field hockey go winless in second tourney of year
2001-10-11

After a solid showing at home in the first tournament of the Canada West season, the Dinos women's field hockey team looked like a German sports car doing 90, flying down the open road to Manitoba. But I regret to inform you, the foreign roadster is no more.

Whether due to a lack of steering or the wheels simply coming off, the Dinos crashed last weekend in Winnipeg. The sleek lines and smooth handling of week one is now a pile of twisted metal and broken glass.

Bandits foiled by poor script
2001-10-11

About an hour into Bandits, I realized I was witnessing an ingenious theft. Disguised as a clever crime comedy, Bandits tricked me into watching it, effectively stealing two hours of my time and the rest of the audience's too.

It's the story of two men with opposite personalities, who after escaping from prison, discover a clever way to successfully rob banks. After gaining infamy across the country, they kidnap and fall in love with the same woman, which we all know is never a smart move. To make it work and escape the police, the robbers pull a grand, bullet-riddled stunt at the end.

Blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind
Interpreting the sign language of Calgary's mayoral Candidates' ad campaigns
2001-10-11

For some Calgarians, election campaign signs are just flashes of colour on the drive home. "A civic election," they think, "hmm, interesting." The plethora of billboards, lawn signs and banners mean little to them, and under-standably so.

However, for the first time in a long while, Al Duerr is not running, ending his 12-year tenure as mayor, leaving the field wide open. Nineteen candidates are vying for the job and four of them--Dave Bronconnier, Ray Clark, Bev Longstaff and Richard Magnus--are ahead in the polls. The result of Duerr's decision is now a bumper crop of ads.

Signage plays a bigger part in civic elections as it is a different species than a provincial or federal election. For these reasons, we asked the following questions: What are these billboards saying? Why do they use colour or a certain slogan? Because we were interested only in the prolific signage, only candidates with prominent signs were analyzed. For a full list of candidates, please refer to the box below.

Firewalls protect you from me
2001-10-11

Fall is traditionally a time when hordes of post-secondary neophytes get Internet access for the first time. For those established on the Internet, this can be both a blessing and a curse. New faces offer new ideas and perspectives. At the same time however, they'll try to figure out why TYPING IN ALL CAPS and sending large pictures of random dogs to everyone--making all other e-mail bounce--is bad. The influx of new users also brings out a host of unsavoury characters out to vandalize or take control of the computers of unsuspecting users.

Personal firewalls are a common solution to this problem.

What your momma never said
2001-10-11

What good are "words to live by" if you can't actually live by them? Most of our rules are too antique to apply, so I have reworked the following old clichés into brand-new clichés for the modern university student.

"You can accomplish anything if you try." More...
