In the name of national security
University of Calgary coordinates call for new white paper 2001-11-22
Though it seems unlikely, debate over national security has reached a higher pitch and a University of Calgary initiative is the cause.
In early November, the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies at the U of C released a report calling for an overhaul of the Federal Government's National Defence policy. The Department of National Defence previously based decisions on a white paper published in 1994. White papers are the highest level of governmental policy statement and the CMSS report suggests that current circumstances warrant new direction for the DND. More...

Bend over kids, it's tuition time
2001-11-22
Editorial - Congratulations, students. You're about to take a hefty tuition increase up the ass for another year.
For those of you who actually give a shit, the Board of Governors will decide next year's tuition increase Fri., Nov. 30 at 9 a.m. in the Blue Room of the Dining Centre. We at the Gauntlet demand you attend this meeting, whether you're a pot-smoking activist or you drive an Acura to the Arts Parkade every morning. Farewell to the unsung heroes
Four Dino football players hang it up after five years 2001-11-22
Many people go through school as a means to an end. They strive to do whatever it takes to get their degrees and leave this godforsaken place. They never take the time to involve themselves in the true essence of what university is really about and never care about what it means to be a part of this institution. For those, we pray. However, there are those who strive for more than the piece of paper they're presented with when they leave, those who get involved in more than just group projects and those who know what it means to be a part of the University of Calgary and have actually dreaded the day they would leave it all behind. Selling yourself one soul at a time
2001-11-22
The concept of selling one's soul to the devil has been explored countless times in theatre and literature. Its popularization may be traced back the script of the University of Calgary Drama Department's newest production. The funny thing is, it was probably more religious criticism than anything else.
"Christopher Marlowe was an athiest," says Anton Degroot, who plays Pope Adrian in Marlowe's Dr. Faustus. "He put so many different levels into it. He really criticizes some of the things the church was doing at the time--a lot of it was historically accurate." More...

Carol Shields
"Committing biography" feels good; receiving an honorary degree feels better 2001-11-22
Carol Shields is a surprisingly petite woman with a surprisingly quiet voice. The winner of numerous international book awards (including a Pulitzer Prize, a Governor General's award and the Orange Book Award), the revered Canadian author speaks with understated confidence and conviction. And, like many people in the last two months, she offers her own opinion of the Sept. 11 tragedy, which she also touched on in her convocation address.
"My hope is that it will change the direction of society so that we'll be a more caring society," she says. "I think we're all assessing the values we hold in life, and everyone is worried about the materialism of the western world. I hope people are encouraged to take your life and take your time seriously." More...

DND to ferret out bin Laden, Taliban
No word yet from Harry Potter on controversial plan 2001-11-22
With warnings from the Pentagon of a long and drawn out conflict with the Taliban, the Canadian military is devising alternative strategies to combat this new foe. In an attempt to think "outside the box," General Leon Pantaloux has put together a task force of the nation's leading military minds, whose purpose is to devise a method of gaining the advantage in the rough terrain of Afghanistan.
Among the reported methods discussed, the following were believed to be the most promising and will be allocated the bulk of this project's research and development budget. More...
