A renewed appreciation
2001-12-06
Editorial - As 2001 draws to a close, we must remember that life has gone on with little outward change despite the world-shifting events of September 11.
As we wade through December, the stress of exams and papers feels no different. People still ebb and flow through university hallways much as they have for more than 40 years, and classes go on. Christmas and New Year's Day will probably also come and go with little fanfare. But this is not to say that absolutely nothing changed--at least not outwardly so. More...

Making a name for himself
Rideout backstopping the Dinos to top of standings 2001-12-06
You may not have heard of Scott Rideout, but hockey players all over Western Canada spit, curse and gnash their teeth at the mention of his name. Rideout, the Dino's fifth-year goaltender, is having the best season of his Canadian Inter-unversity Sport career in this, his final year of eligibility. But don't suggest this to him.
"I think I've had a productive first half," he laughed, dismissing this reporter's glowing assessment of his play. "I think I've been consistent, and I think I'm managing to contribute--whether it's 47 or 20 shots against." More...

In Israel's defence
Amir Maimon, Counsellor at the Embassy of Israel in Toronto, offers his perspectives on compromise, security and peace 2001-12-06
"During my youth and during my military service I had many questions about being a Jew, about being an Israeli," says a nostalgic Amir Maimon. "But when I saw those two airplanes approaching landing, I felt very proud as a Jew and very proud as an Israeli. And I knew that there is only one country in the world that would look after its natives the way the state of Israel is doing."
A former officer in the Israeli military and the current Counsellor at the Embassy of Israel in Toronto, Maimon holds the state he serves close to his heart. Stationed at the Embassy in Ethiopia on the eve of the fall of Addis Ababa in 1991, Maimon helped orchestrate Operation Solomon, an airlift of thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. More...

Greetings from the Web
2001-12-06
In light of the recent anthrax scares in the mail, many people have switched from postal mail to e-mail to get their messages across.
Greeting cards are no exception to the online migration this holiday season. While online greetings have existed in various forms for at least six years, 2001 will be the year they need to prove their mettle. They must grow to meet the demands of a general population seeking a reliable means of delivering their holiday cheer, where the only infection possible is from a computer virus. More...

Who wants to be a porno star?
2001-12-06
What the? - With the ratings for Survivor: Africa at an all-time low, many new reality shows have been placed on the backburner. Production has been halted on many new reality TV shows originally slated to air in 2002/03. Reality series such as NBC's "Home Alone: Real Kids, Real Homes" and Disney's "Lost in the Magic Kingdom" have been cancelled in favour of series aimed more at the female demographic, such as Barbra Streisand's new talk show, "Exploring the Kama Sutra."
