Job cuts "possible"
2002-11-28

Budget - In the wake of last week's budget reallocation and reduction announcement, the University of Calgary hinted at possible job cuts at its Thu., Nov. 28 Board of Governors meeting.

"Given that 70 per cent of the budget are people costs, I think I would be the first to say that it would be possible that there could be job loss," said U of C Vice-President Finance and Services Phyllis Heaphy.

Lady Dinos double up the wins
2002-11-28

Basketball - Sooner or later, the Canada West conference is going to have to take notice.

A pair of wins against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns last weekend gave the Dinos women's basketball team a 4-2 record, tops in their division. The Dinos won 62-59 on Friday, then put together a more convincing 69-60 game on Saturday, in their first homestand of the year.

Experimenting with Viewmanship...
2002-11-28

Film - Juxtaposed surveillance camera footage; a 28-minute continuous shot of the Calgary tower's revolving restaurant; a series of shots centering on the various incarnations of the first pre-fabricated house design--if it's not independent cinema then Vin Diesel's movies have become strangely unconventional. Viewmanship is a series of short, experimental films by filmmaker Patrick McLaughlin, the acclaimed cinematographer of the +15 drama waydowntown.

Born in Medicine Hat, McLaughlin remained relatively isolated from film until his arrival at Concordia University, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production.

Dreadlock Soldier
2002-11-28

Hair - People have been describing me as the "Asian girl with dreadlocks" for the last three years, but this statement is invalid now because I just cut off my dreads two weeks ago. Many people don't understand the significance of such an act, in fact, most people don't know anything about dreadlocks. There is a growing trend of people weaving their hair into dreadlocks, but it should not be just a fashion trend. Dreadlocks are a lifestyle, a statement, and to some they bear religious meaning.

Although many cultures have a history of people wearing dreadlocks, Africans are most often associated with it. This is due to the fact that African genetic "fro" hair dreads a lot easier than the hair of other races. It is an exclusive nappy trait of the race, and they often use it as a symbol of their culture. A few decades ago, many African Americans grew dreadlocks as a form of rebellion against white oppression. Dreadlocks are so widespread among the African race that it is often called the black hairstyle.

Does video-game violence lead to the real thing?
2002-11-28

Video-Games - It's only a game, right? Last month's release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City revived the controversy surrounding realistically violent video games.

Some people, notably parents, are alarmed at the possible influence these games have on young people. Others see this as overreaction. In either case, with the success of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 3, which has sold over seven million copies since its release, the success of the sequel seems inevitable.
