Shine on you crazy diamonds
2003-09-25

In 1964, students at what is now Wilfrid Laurier University started a fundraising campaign shining shoes to raise money for cystic fibrosis.

Today, Shinerama is the single most successful student fundraiser in the country. Since its humble beginnings the event has raised over $13.1 million for CF research and involves over 60 campuses across Canada.

Klein's controversial comment
2003-09-25

Voice - It takes a special sort of politician to wreck months of progressive work with one untimely joke. Really, think about how hard it must be. The joke would have to be so bad that it threatened to cost millions of dollars in lost sales, threatened to lower already shaky confidence levels abroad and threatened to hurt an industry that has already suffered so much.

Luckily for us, our Premier can do just that.

Canada corrals Brazil
2003-09-25

Tennis - Canada had home-court advantage in more ways than one Sept. 19-21 at the Corral. Without their fancy clay courts and loud crowds, the Brazilian tennis squad found themselves pining for home during Davis Cup Competition in Calgary.

For 103 years, the best tennis nations in the world have been squaring off once a year, vying to win the coveted Davis Cup. This is not your average tennis tournament. The Davis Cup pits nation against nation, creating a lively (read: drunken) and fiercely nationalistic atmosphere. History and rowdy boozehounds--that, my friends, is sport.

Sex, drugs and jazz
2003-09-25

Theatre - Watch smoke curl in the air as it drifts across beams of light, illuminating a jazz quartet belting out cool jazz. Listen to a baby-faced trumpeter singing softly into the microphone, playing old standby pieces in a way that stops conversation cold.

Chet Baker sang with a simplicity that made familiar songs ambiguous and enchanting, he was a national sensation by the time he was 23. Thirty five years later, he was found dead after falling two storeys from a hotel window.

unnatural law:
evaluating our environmental policy
2003-09-25

Leading environmental lawyer David Boyd will be speaking on campus Fri., Sept. 26 to promote his new book, Unnatural Law: Rethinking Environmental Law and Policy.

I know what you're thinking: "Oh great, another hippie from Lotusland with a degree in tree-hug-ology who's going to tell us we're all horrible people for driving cars and eating his animal friends."

"Any interest in a Calgary (Alberta, Canada) Fark Party? Come for the Beef, stay for the Fark."
– twotontim on Fark.com, September 14, 2003

As one of the few participatory Internet sites that survived both the dot-com bust and the economic turmoil blamed on terrorism, Fark.com has been staple for oddball news junkies (well, junkies of oddball news, mostly) for several years. Twenty-four hours a day, thousands from around the world sign on to read and discuss the strangest, funniest, stupidest and most newsworthy news items of the hour, or to simply modify images in the daily Photoshop contests. Also, it has boobies and weeners.
