Those comical Americans
2004-05-13

Editorial - Spiderman wraps up criminals, Batman knocks thugs unconscious, and Punisher blows away enemies of the good with weapons.

They are our idols, standing up for what's right and taking measures as extreme as deemed necessary to reach these ends. They go above and beyond the authority posited to other officers of peace in their demand for justice.

Best in the land
2004-05-13

Sitting on a bench, the sun shining down, it is clear Joanna Niemczewska has grown in the past year. While her warm, humble demeanor remains unchanged, a quiet resolve shines through. 2004-05-13

If Christina Aguilera were to take a two year break away from her music, would she come back a much wiser and more efficient shit machine? Would her new music cast a shadow over the seemingly endless waterfall of verbal diarrhea her lips once spawned? Knowing that's never going to happen--the plastic holding her face together does have an expiry date after all--we can, thankfully, explore this question with JFK, lead singer and mastermind of the ska-reggae group JFK & The Conspirators.

Recuperating in a sleepy mountain town before renewing their tour, JFK reminiscence about the time spent away from The Conspirators after their successful 1998 debut album Mayor of Ganja City. It gave him a chance to reflect on what he had done, moving to Montreal for a couple of years, floating between bands and gigs. Finally, though, he returned to his ska roots in Winnipeg and to his band.

The Agony of War
2004-05-13

Imagine waking up each morn-ing to gunshots, the loss of innocent lives and an endless state of distress. Fear dominates every choice and the future seems bleak and torn. For a long and painful time, this scene was a sad reality for the people of Somalia, including Somali refugee Mohamed Bakayr.

Ten years ago, Bakayr was informed that if he did not flee his much-loved country, he would be forced to kill or be killed in the midst of the pandemonium known as the Somalia Civil War. Bakayr escaped with thousands of other Somali refugees to the Utange Refugee Camp in nearby Kenya, where he spent four years before his long journey to Canada. Once here, Bakayr brought over the remainder of his immediate family and quickly began adapting to his new life and home. He attained a Library Information Diploma from SAIT, became the community liaison for Somalis in Calgary and authored The Agony of Somalia's Civil War.
