NUTV in dire straights
2004-10-28

Hostility is brewing between the Students' Union and the University of Calgary's television station, NUTV.

Last week, a critical letter from the SU was sent to the executive director of NUTV, Kevin Allen, questioning the station's focus and direction. The letter declared that NUTV "to a large degree disregards its student constituency" and has an audience "rank[ing] in the dozens."

Editorial - Last weeks revelation that the University of Calgary Budget Committee is proposing five per cent cuts from the university's total operating budget for each of the next four years should hardly come as a surprise. Over the past fifteen years, cuts have been an annual or biannual reality at this university and have mirrored the declining trend in provincial funding to post-secondary education.

The Klein government and the spokespeople at the Alberta Learning Ministry insist until they're blue in the face that contributions to Alberta's post-secondary institutions have increased steadily since 1996, and this is true--to the tune of 58 per cent. But it is also ignoring the financial realities of the current situation. It is not enough to claim that because government grants have increased, the government has done its part. Costs have grown at a significantly higher rate than the paltry three to four per cent extra the government doles out each year to cover inflation. This is not acceptable in Canada's richest province.

Endangered season nears end
Just one more game to prove they're playoff material
2004-10-28

football - Saturday, Oct. 23 the Dinos football team met the Simon Fraser University Clansmen on a very snowy McMahon Field. In front of over 900 cold and shivering, but brave fans, the Dinos let a victory slide through their slippery fingers.

The game began promisingly--once the game actually began that is, it was delayed over an hour due to heavy snow fall. Most people would dread having to go out into the cold to blow snow, but not our Dinos. They were ready for snow, whereas the closest thing to snow SFU had even seen was the snotty rain that is Vancouver's pitiful attempt at winter.

Music Interview: Jealousy makes world go round
2004-10-28

music - Inevitably, people will change as time goes by, and one of the most noticeable indications of this change is music. A shift in style doesn't necessarily mean a shift in musical values, but can be the product of the self-assurance gained with experience. Two years since their last release, sisters Tegan and Sara have come a long way with their new album, So Jealous.

"There's obviously a natural growth that happens," says Tegan. "Sara and I are 24 this year and it's not that we feel old or anything, but we definitely feel more mature and a little more confident."

Haunted Calgary
2004-10-28

Haunted houses, spooky set-ups, and eerie encounters are generally the themes of modern day Halloween. Guys dress up in attempts to be funny, girls dress up in attempts to be sexy, and ghost sightings are at an all time high.

Although the original holiday was intended as a Catholic day for the observance of saints, today it is seen as an opportunity to frighten or be frightened--that and to consume an ridiculous amount of booze.
