Equal funding?
2004-12-09

"The fact that in a rich province there should be any deficit at all from the provincial grant is already very serious and scandalous."

University of Calgary Faculty Association President Anton Colijn doesn't mince words when it comes to the current levels of provincial funding for the U of C. Along with university administration and the Students' Union, TUCFA sees the current distribution of grants between Alberta's post-secondary institutions as flawed, leaving the U of C struggling with budget cuts and overcrowded classrooms.

Seņor Winter
2004-12-09

editorial - They all shudder and scowl when he's in their presence. Those that know him seem to know him too well. Those that hate him have never really given him a chance. Old Man Winter has received a bad rap from the majority that he just can't shake and doesn't deserve.

I am part of the marginal group that anxiously awaits winter's arrival every year and I wish it would come sooner during the months of summer. It's not anticipation of the holiday season and all the treasures it brings; rather, I eagerly look forward to the days when a deep breath of fresh, cold, crisp air fills my lungs entirely and snow absolutely covers every inch of this town. It's a refreshing burst that I crave during the spring, summer and fall. Once it comes, I can never get enough.

Hockeysaurs de-feather Thunderbirds
2004-12-09

hockey - The games Dec. 3-4 marked the mid point of the season for the Dinos men's hockey club. Coming off two heartbreaking losses to the University of Alberta, the Dinos were determined to make the most of this weekend's opportunity against the worst team in the Canada West division--the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

Friday night, the Dinos cruised to a 5-2 victory after Alex Lalonde opened the scoring only 11 seconds into the match. By the end of the first period, Jordan Walker had given Calgary a 2-1 lead and they never looked back. Despite only firing four shots on goal in the third period, both Craig Strain and Colin McRae made the most of their opportunities to solidify the victory.

Concert Review: James Brown breaches 5th dimensional space to funk up Calgary
The Godfather of Soul puts on a damn good show
2004-12-09

music - A massive pillar of people huddle inside the MacEwan Student's Centre. Imposing people in red shirts shuffle along the quivering mass of humanity to make sure no one tries to hurdle the steel gates containing them. When the clock strikes seven, the red shirts converge to the head of the pillar and allow the people to spill forth into the ballroom.

The ballroom fills up faster than a prom date's loins and they are left to wait. That's when R&B group Jacksoul steps on to stage and sets the mood for the evening--slow, funky and emotionaly. This is soul.

A contest of skill and judgement
Contributions by Ryan May, Ben Hoffman, Shannon McCabe, Joelle Robichaud and Roxanna Pullan
2004-12-09

It's that time of year again: time to dump off all the swag the Gauntlet been slowly accumulating since September in the timliest manner possible. And what manner is more timely than to launch a contest with awesome prizes to be won, tied to a brainbending and expansive activities page?

Yes, dear reader, you can win one of three brand new copies of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary, 2nd Edition. A dictionary will go to each of the three fastest puzzlers to complete the riddles on this page in their entirety, then present the tear sheet (in pen only, please, not pencil) at the office of the Gauntlet, msc 319.
