Union pickets for jobs
2005-03-10
Over 1,000 students and staff turned out on the lawn of MacEwan Student Center to protest the loss of nearly 300 jobs in the planned outsourcing of University of Calgary Food Services to Chartwells, an American company.
"Most students are studying and are not necessarily aware of what is going on, but the turnout was still good," said Nancy Ritchie, vice-chair of Alberta Union of Provincial Employees Local 52. "The Students' Union as well as the Graduate Students' Association have been behind us and some students were even in the picket line. Students should be concerned because these support services contribute to the quality of the learning environment." More...

A great whodunnit mystery
2005-03-10
Editorial - In a shocking turn of events, nearly all of the issues of last week's Gauntlet disappeared from around campus. With the shelves bare of our perverse attempt at journalism, it was decided that pen ought to be put to paper in an effort to find the culprit; as such, we would need to appeal to the trinity of all detective work: the motive, the means, and the opportunity.
The latter two of the three would prove for naught, since the stands are oft left unguarded, and the paper is free; But what of motive? It would seem simple in this case: the issue contained an image deemed in poor taste by many on campus. 2005-03-10
music - "Whoooooooo's Hunnnngry!?"
Orange, red and violet lights flashed in sequence over the stage as Simon Le Bon thrust his chest forward and screamed into the microphone. The stage came alive with strobe lights and mist as Duran Duran kicked it into high gear and played the song everyone paid to see. Playing "Hungry like the wolf" at the Saddledome on Monday to throngs of voracious fans, Duran Duran proved even after 27 years of drugs, ridiculous music videos and more member changes than the original Power Rangers, they can still bring the rock. Thank Guinness for St. Patty's Day
Your brief guide to history and boozing 2005-03-10
It's that time of the year again-green paraphernalia, shamrocks, four-leaf clovers, those adorable little people we call leprechauns, one day of solid non-stop boozing, and the inevitable next-day green urine. That's right folks; it's St. Patrick's Day.
This magical celebration means all those of non-Irish descent will spend most of the day half cut "celebrating Irish tradition" and immersing themselves in stereotypical Irish symbols, beliefs, and conventions. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate culture, many forget or fail to realize the legitimacy of this holiday. More...

The League of Innappropriate Super People
2005-03-10
A forward by the creators
We live in perilous times, dear readers. Maniacs are in positions of power, television produces mountains of reeking drek and the last of the great discoteques have been swallowed by the vengeful Earth. In such times we can only look to men greater than ourselves, to the upper eschalons of power where the most potent of potentates dwell.
Unfortunately, finding them slit open by tracheotamies and bowed by scandal, we must turn our eyes to the raked muck we slosh through every day. We can turn only to: The League of Inappropriate Super People.-kubik More...
