Ricca, whose labelmate on Neferiu Records is Calgary-based art-rapper Mantrakid, is an immigrant to the city. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, he finished school at Acadia University and found himself heading to Calgary for work. More... Get a B.A. in beatmatching at VoxboxVoxbox Studios DJ School offers instruction in the DJ art 2010-03-04 - Music - Flautists need not apply to Voxbox Studios DJ School. The studio and school is a place where wannabe DJs can load up their gear and learn the art of mixing and scratching from some of Calgary's best. Owned and operated by David Gale, a.k.a. DJ Damage, Voxbox has taught the art of mixing for five years, though its origin is a lot more humble. More... Young artists and designers come out for PARKshow2010-03-04 - Kara Chomistek wants to ensure fellow students have a place to show -- and sell -- their art and fashion. Chomistek, in her fourth year of a biomechanical engineering degree at the University of Calgary, is president of Promoting Art | Redefining Kulture, a local art and fashion group holding their second spring fundraiser at the Chinese Cultural Centre Sat., Mar. 6 at 8:30 p.m. More... Editorial: Poster vandals crossed the lineRacial stereotyping unacceptable 2010-03-04 - Editorial - Grafitti on Students' Union election candidates' posters is par for the course. Unfortunately, this year the graffiti has gone farther than mere obscenities. Ola Mohajer and Hara Madri, two visibly Muslim candidates, had their campaign posters vandalized with racial slurs. Mohajer, running for the Faculty of Science representative position, had her slogan changed from "I am science" to "I am a terrorist." The poster has since been taken down. More... (4 comments) Mass Effect 2's overall Sheen suffers from flaws2010-01-28 - Video Games - Bioware has crafted another fun, yet flawed, space romp with Mass Effect 2. The Edmonton-based video game developer's sequel to their extremely popular 2007 space opera focuses on expanding the game's universe and adding new races and moral choices to their futuristic sci-fi military shooter. Mass Effect 2 opens with main character Commander Sheppard's death. Sheppard is later reborn at the hands of Cerberus, a paramilitary organization which acted as a peripheral villain in the original game. Whole colonies of humans are disappearing and Sheppard sets out to investigate with the backing of the Martin Sheen-voiced Illusive Man, a man whose surgically too-perfect complexion doesn't betray his mysterious nature. Radiopark offers live music and comfortable atmosphere for students 2010-01-21 - Venues - If Chris Jamieson, the manager of Radiopark music room, looks familiar to some University of Calgary students, it's probably because they've spent far too much time at the Den. The manager of the new live music venue found his calling while working at the beloved campus bar. "Working at the Den influenced who I am in many ways -- not the least of which is my style and approach to hospitality," he says. "I think it speaks volumes about the Den to say that it is a safe, friendly, comfortable place where university students can go and be themselves and I certainly wanted [that] to stand true in any establishment that I direct." More... Entering the era of Gaga2010-01-14 - Column - Music industry bigwigs are complete misogynists. This isn't a new sentiment. Label heads and A&R representatives are always looking for the next big thing by looking backward to past trends and this time they're looking for ladies to rule the charts. With Lady Gaga's incredible breakthrough, as well as Susan Boyle and Taylor Swift capturing the hearts of millions this year, it appears that the labels have made their choice: women are the key to financial success in 2010. In a recent Reuters article with Q Magazine, editor Paul Rees said that, "If you look at all the things that are being teed up by the major labels, most of them are solo female artists." More... Gift cards suck: the Gauntlet gift guide2009-12-03 - No one wants, nor needs, a manicure set for Christmas. This is the peril of the typical newspaper shopping guide -- they suck because the gift recommendations are for old people. In the interests of keeping families together this Christmas, the Gauntlet offers these suggestions. After previous artistic director Dawn Dymond moved to the United States with her family, University of Calgary dance professor Flynn wasn't intimidated about going back to the thick of organizing the extremely popular show. The Indo-Canadian, Berlin-based regal rocker is a proud pappy to a small crew of ragamuffins. When he speaks about his kids, his voice is bright and energetic -- which is good, considering an ugly stint in Kentucky that the band is still trying to put behind them. More...
