Spun: Jeff Healey
2010-04-15 -

Spun - This posthumous release from guitarist/vocalist Jeff Healey is a pleasantly upbeat 14 song collection of 1920s and 1930s swinging jazz numbers. While most listeners know Healey as a blues rock guitar player, he did form the Jazz Wizards in 2002 and recorded three swing albums with them by 2006, playing trumpet and guitar. It's no secret that this style was Healey's true musical love and it's fortunate he was able to record these tracks before he died of cancer in 2008 at the age of 41.

Last Call is culled from solo, duo and trio sessions from 2007 that feature Healey on vocals, guitar and trumpet, Drew Juecka on violin and Ross Wooldridge on piano and clarinet. Despite the lack of a rhythm section, this sparse line-up breezes through the material like it's a walk in the park. In fact, the music is perfect listening for a walk in the park. The majority of the arrangements are joyous and leave plenty of room for virtuosic soloing from all three of these top notch players. Healey's earnest vocals come across in a very sincere and soulful manner, as if he had been singing these tunes the entirety of his short life.

Spun: Frank Zappa
Philly '76

2010-03-04 -

Spun - When Frank Zappa passed away, he left behind a massive collection of unfinished works in his basement vault that the Zappa Family Trust have been slowly sifting through. Although having earned a reputation for working at a snail’s pace, the Trust does occasionally release the odd hidden gem.

Philly ’76 is a two-disc, complete concert featuring a seldom heard line-up of Zappa musicians. The oddest presence is Bianca Odin, who provides rare female vocals to Zappa’s set list. Unfortunately, Odin did not even finish the 1976 tour due to constant requests from crowds for her to take off her clothes. Eddie Jobson, who just left Roxy Music provides superb keyboards and violin. That tour also marked the introduction of guitarist and vocalist Ray White, who later became a familiar member of various Zappa projects. Rounding out Zappa’s band is fretless bassist Patrick O’Hearn and maniac drummer Terry Bozzio.

Spun: Bryan Lee
2009-12-03 -

Spun - New Orleans-based bluesman Bryan Lee's 11th solo recording is a swinging mix of original blues tunes and carefully chosen covers. Lee, known as 'The Braille Blues Daddy,' proves his unique guitar and vocal prowess are fully intact. His well rounded band delivers the goods with gusto and charm. Most notable are the soulful sax solos and David Maxwell's lively piano playing, which add the perfect balance to Lee's Bourbon Street flavoured guitar. Although a studio recording, My Lady Don't Love My Lady has a live performance feel.

Lending their efforts to the mix are two of Lee's long-time friends. On Junior Well's "Early In The Morning," Chicago blues guitar slinger Buddy Guy lays down an articulate and blistering solo. "Let Me Up I've Had Enough" is a rollicking composition by Kenny Wayne Shepherd who adds his own fiery touches on guitar.

Spun: The Beatles
2009-09-10 -

Spun - It's about damn time. This two CD package is a promotional sampler of the 14 UK Beatles albums which have been digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London and released on 09.09.09. Fans around the world can finally rejoice in hearing the fab four as they've never heard them before.

The sound quality has been improved substantially. The enhanced audio treatment is crisper, cleaner and clearer with improved separation of each instrument and vocal on every track. The recordings are more dynamic, complete with warmer, pumped up bass. While each disc is available separately, the catalogue has also been released as a stereo box set with all the mini-docs on a DVD, and as a separate box set which includes all the The Beatles mono mixes.
