Feel the Dream Horse's Spirit
2010-02-11 -

Music - The name Dream Horse Spirit brings out a few connotations. One inclination is to assume that the members are three skinny dudes playing keytars.

Sadly, this is not the case, although Nyssa Brown, Trevor Brown, Filip Cieplak and Keith Daser have made Dream Horse into quite an alternative post-dance machine. In the 10 months or so they've been together, they've played their share of house shows and venues. Trevor Brown claims that his initiative to start Dream Horse was for these rowdy, close-quartered performances.

Steam Engine don't need any training
Group formed from other local bands find themselves prepped to rule Calgary as soon as they start recording their EP

2010-01-21 -

Music - Calgary's music scene gets a bad rap. We don't have the sheer number of bands that Brooklyn, Toronto or Montreal have. Yet groups like Steam Engine will help put Calgary music on the map.

With artists like Chad VanGaalen, Woodpigeon and the impressive Sled Island festival, there is a fierce concentration of talent producing a worthwhile show at least every week. Steam Engine is adding their own ferocity to that Calgary talent pool.

Cold Souls delivers on its high-concept
2009-09-03 -

Movies - Woody Allen once dreamed that his soul was the shape and size of a chickpea. Cold Souls isn't as colorful a dream, but the basis is similar.

The movie stars Paul Giamatti as himself, struggling with the role of the very passive Uncle Vanya in the titular Checkhov play. Giamatti then becomes overwhelmed by the weight set on his shoulders and mopes around for a few weeks.

Dalai Lama's visit intended to inspire compassion, collaboration
2009-09-03 -

One of the most influential voices in the world is being hosted by the University of Calgary starting Sept. 30. His Holiness, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, will be speaking as part of the university's event NOW.

According to the U of C website, the two day event/conference was inspired by His Holiness, as it "draws on values of compassion, connectedness and collaboration." The visit, the first in 30 years, aspires to "reinforce the U of C's commitment to international engagement and social responsibility." The first day of the conference, the Dalai Lama will be addressing the Saddledome and on the second an audience on campus. These keynote sessions with His Holiness have attracted the interests of young and old. Tessa O'Byrne, an 18-year-old U of C student, is excited for her chance to participate.

Julie Doiron rocks on until dawn
2009-06-11 -

Music - For those who attended the Flemish Eye Ball, Julie Doiron was a welcome treat. As soon as she finished her first song the air in the Legion hung still and the crowd hungrily waited for more.

It wasn't her first performance however -- not by a long-shot. Doiron has been around for longer than most of her fans have been able to talk and her talent and experience shine stronger every year. Since her band Eric's Trip formed in 1990, Doiron has changed her music and allowed it to change her.

Spun: Chairlift
2009-06-11 -

Spun - Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Aaron Pfenning, vocalist/keyboardist Caroline Polachek and drummer Patrick Wimberly, Charilift are a low-key and engaging group. They're best known for extremely catchy single "Bruises," which was featured in Apple's commercial debuting the 4th generation Nano. If you can say their last names, you win 10 points, but if you can listen to Does You Inspire You without tapping a limb to their simple, catchy beats, you win 20.

Does You Inspire You is a great Sunday morning-at-work album. It's the perfect soundtrack for shaking off a hangover from late night partying, but won't cause a migraine. Some songs, like "Somewhere Around Here," are insanely simple and calming, while others, like "Bruises" or "Garbage," are more serene and poppy.

The Polyjesters bring music around the world
2009-04-02 -

music - The Polyjesters have gotten around a lot. Around the world, that is. Though the two longest standing members of this ever-expanding band, Jason and Sheldon Valleau, started playing music in Didsbury, it's taken them to France for four years, busking their way around the world, from the streets of Amsterdam and Nice.

Both Valleaus say they owe the band's unique sound of upright bass and baritone ukulele to their family history.
