A new year of theatre: a sneak peek at Alberta Theatre Project’s 2026/27 season

Alberta Theatre Projects (ATP) has recently announced its 2026-27 season.
Titled At the Edge of Being, this upcoming lineup of plays will explore themes of identity and change, telling stories that will leave a lasting impact.
These tales are a celebration of Canadian storytelling through amplifying Canadian voices. We have listed below their upcoming projects which are sure to appeal to our student base.
Evil Dead The Musical is a play that is perfect for Halloween season. The book and lyrics are created by George Reinblatt, being based on the Evil Dead film written and directed by Sam Raimi.
It centers around five college students who find themselves turned into demons by a mysterious force of evil. Ash, a houseware employee, finds himself thrown in the middle of this conflict and must face the college students-turned-demons. Mixing horror with comedy, the play is filled with elements of gore and cheesy jokes. The musical will be on from Oct. 13 to Nov. 14.
Based on the legendary novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, will be produced by ATP as their winter production. In the adaptation by Canadian playwright Kim Selody, audiences will be able to explore the classic world of the legendary novel through a new lens.
The story centers around Bilbo Baggins in his quest to assist a group of Dwarves in reclaiming their home. As a classical fantasy story, audiences will get to see various mythical creatures, such as Dragons, Goblins, and Trolls. It is an adventurous tale meant to be enjoyed by those ages 7+. The production will be on from Dec. 1 to Jan. 3.
A tale of morality and freedom, Fifteen Dogs is a story in which the Greek god Apollo and Hermes bestow fifteen dogs the gift of human consciousness to see if they could die happily. The play is an adaptation by Marie Farsi of the novel of the same title by Andre Alexis.
Throughout the play, the dogs experience both the benefits and trials associated with the complexities of human intelligence. They clash over their newfound freedom and navigate their redefined relationships with humans. The play will be on from Feb. 2 to Feb. 21.
Burning Mom is a play written and directed by Mieko Ouchi. The story is based on Ouchi’s mother’s lived experience. It stars Dorothy, a woman who has lost her husband of fourty-five years, and her experience going on her late husband’s ideal retirement road trip to Burning Man. The play is a story of grief and recovery. It shines a light on Dorothy’s quest for navigating life without her husband and gaining the courage to jump back into life. The production will be on from Apr. 6 to Apr. 25.
Finally, Dream: A Canadian Musical is a play Alberta Theatre Projects is putting on in collaboration with Forte Musical Theatre. It is written and composed by Terry Bachynski. The play focuses around a teenage boy named Eddie, a former scammer in the city who is put in the care of a widow on a farm. Throughout the story, Eddie learns about the process of redemption, and finds purpose in his new environment. Canadian identity is highlighted through the story through a mix of storytelling and profound music which is sure to leave its mark on the audience. The play will be on from May. 25 to Jun. 20.
