As the heat fades and leaves turn golden, back-to-school routines, morning lectures and study sessions are revived. The sharp autumn air rolls in and life begins to look like a study-scene montage from a movie; the weeks stack up and turn to a monotonous life. It becomes easy to sink into a stew of stress and scholastics while watching the season slip past the window.

Even in the brisk fall air, tinged with ice, there are incentives to swap the desk for the pitch, the court of the foothills. Whether you are looking to pull on a heavy sweater with a hot drink as local teams fight through the semester or lace up your running shoes to hit the frosty morning trails, Calgary offers plenty of ways to indulge in the autumn athletic scene.

For the Athletic Watcher

Between the Dinos launching into full swing and professional soccer in high gear, the city offers no shortage of sidelines to join. Grab a warm drink, throw on a heavy sweater and head out to catch home-field action. With the Dinos All-Access Pass, entry to regular-season home games is free.

Top fall home games

  • Sept. 4: Dinos football kickoff game vs. UBC Thunderbirds — 5:30 p.m. at McMahon Stadium
  • Sept. 11: Dinos women's soccer vs. Alberta — 6:30 p.m. at McMahon Stadium
  • Sept. 24-26: Dinos Cup men's volleyball tournament — Jack Simpson Gym
  • Sept. 25: Dinos football vs. Alberta — 7 p.m. at McMahon Stadium
  • Sept. 26: Dinos women's rugby vs. Alberta — 3:30 p.m.

Check godinos.com for full weekly schedules for soccer, field hockey, and rugby.

On the professional women’s pitch, the Calgary Wild FC claimed their first win in August against the Vancouver Rise FC, followed by a second win against the Ottawa Rapid FC. Calgary Wild FC will  return to McMahon Stadium for a pair of pivotal autumn home fixtures as they push for crucial points down the stretch:

  • Sept. 12: Wild FC vs. Halifax Tides FC at noon — The Wild will kick off their September home slate with Active Girls Day at McMahon Stadium, hunting for a decisive win on home turf against the Halifax team.
  • Sept. 27: Wild FC vs. Vancouver Rise FC at 2 p.m.— A high-stakes clash against their West Coast rivals, the Wild will need to show their newfound confidence in front of the net to clinch the win.

Tickets to either match can be purchased here for as little as $30.

Meanwhile, the Cavalry FC continue their campaign near the top of the Canadian Premier League table. The squad returns to the ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows for two key home matches this September:

  • Sept. 19: Cavalry FC vs. Forge FC at 3 p.m.  — a heavyweight rivalry matchup that promises an intense, physical battle as the Cavalry take on the Hamilton powerhouse.
  • Sept. 25: Cavalry FC vs. FC Supra du Québec at 7 p.m. — Under the Friday night lights at Spruce Meadows, Cavalry aim to lock down a vital victory against the league's newest addition.

Tickets for both matches, starting at $25, are available here.

For the Athletic Enjoyer

While dressing in your favourite team's merchandise and gathering in the stands with your friends is a great way to make memories and spend your time, there are also several exciting events students can experience.

  • Sept. 3: The Friends of Cowboys Run Club is hosting a casual 5-km fun run; runners are invited to show up for a social and games session starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Cowboys Park before the run begins at 7:30 p.m. It’s completely free to join; all it takes is an RSVP on the Cowboys Dance Hall Site.
  •  Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. in North Glenmore Park, the  Pawsitive Match Rescue Foundation is hosting its third annual 5-km Bark-a-thon. If you’re willing to spend a little money in exchange for the company of furry friends, show up and enjoy a Saturday run surrounded by dogs for as little as $45. Tickets are available on Race Roster.

If running is not your jam, the Calgary Sports and Social Club offers drop-in tennis, soccer, flag football, beach volleyball, dodgeball, indoor volleyball and pickleball throughout September, with the schedule found on their website.

Staying close to campus is always an option, with campus intramurals starting up again with sports ranging from indoor and outdoor soccer, pickleball and volleyball. Sign-ups are available on the Active Living website.

Whether you are cheering from the stands wrapped in a heavy blanket or lacing up your shoes to hit the field yourself, autumn in Calgary moves quickly. Stepping away from the lecture halls and library desks isn't just a distraction — it is the ultimate reset before midterms set in. Grab your sweater, step out into the crisp fall air, and enjoy the game before winter rolls into town.
