In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Dinos women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the University of Victoria Vikes in the first round of the Canada West Championships.
The Dinos entered the pitch on Oct. 30 as the Prairie Division's top seed, but their season came to an abrupt end on home turf. Although the Dinos dominated shot attempts and maintained an aggressive attack, they struggled to convert key chances into goals.
On a freezing night, the Dinos broke their pregame huddle wearing highlighter-pink toques. Third-year goalkeeper Cheridan Johnson was tested early, turning away a strong Vikes shot and confidently handling a series of corner kicks. Johnson stayed vocal and organized the defence cleanly, limiting the VIkes high-danger opportunities and pushing play back into the opposition half.
Up front, fourth-year forward Erica Mysko made a hard crossfield run and slid toward the Vikes keeper, just missing the connection. Fifth-year forward and co-captain Ella Djuranic then launched a powerful strike over the crossbar, followed closely by another near-miss from second-year forward Addi White.
Mysko continued to press the attack, repeatedly breaking into the box and inching closer to a breakthrough. Despite the Dinos’ pressure, the match remained scoreless at halftime.
Determined to snap their scoring slump, the Dinos came out firing in the second half, elevating their intensity and setting up Mysko with a shot within the first 20 seconds. The substitution of fourth-year forward Sarah Donick brought fresh energy to an already relentless offensive push.
Shortly after a header from fifth-year midfielder and co-captain Sofia DiGiacomo rattled off the crossbar, the Vikes broke the deadlock in the 56th minute. The setback galvanized the Dinos, who pressured the Vikes into an own goal to equalize just five minutes later.
The equalizer heightened the match’s physical edge, drawing the night’s first yellow cards amid a flurry of sharp passes and shots from DiGiacomo and clutch saves by Johnson. Yet despite their persistent attack, the Dinos could not pull ahead.
It was the Dinos’ aggressive positioning that left space open behind the back line, allowing Vikes fourth-year defender Adrianna Hilton to capitalize and score the decisive goal.
With the final whistle, the Dinos’ hopes of another year in the finals were frozen, and their season came to an abrupt and unexpected end.
Head coach Diogo Raposso commended his team’s resilience and unity, noting how much the squad achieved after graduating 10 veterans last season.
"I don't think the scoreline is representative of what we created," Raposso said. "We showed who we are. We just came up a little short."
