The Students in Communications club (SiC) is a student run club catered towards students majoring and minoring in Communications and Media Studies, though it is open to members from all faculties. In an interview with the Gauntlet, Emily Hills, the president of SiC, provides some insights as to what the club is about and how students can get involved.
“A lot of our focus has been trying to help with taking all of the things from the courses and lectures and giving people a connection to the professional world,” said Hills.
“We hosted a very successful industry night last winter term, and this year we are doing two events like that,” said Hills.
Hills goes on to mention a “professors night” that will be occurring, and this event will showcase Communications professors on a panel to discuss “their professional experiences and less of the instructing.” This event is aimed towards Communications students seeking to get their foot into the door of the professional world.
Along with such events, SiC also has various workshops.
“We are looking at doing a LinkedIn workshop,” stated Hills, as a way to decrease the stress students often have with the idea of creating a LinkedIn account. “Our first event this year is going to be a first year’s event to create an introduction to the department along with things that we wish we had all learned sooner,” said Hills.
Along with gaining an insight into the professional world, Hills states that being a part of SiC is “an opportunity to connect with peers outside of the classroom.”
“We are also starting a monthly newsletter this year to provide information and opportunities to those who are more interested in Communications,” said Hills. This newsletter is available to members of SiC.
For those interested in joining SiC to gain professional experience and to gain connections beyond the academic sphere, the club is free to join. Hills also stated that the club is seeking new executives, especially first and second year students eager to have “hands on deck and are able to support and help us get things done.”
