U of C SCPA alumni to keep on your radar

By Hannah Caparino, March 25 2026—

Did you know that UCalgary is a hub for artists of all art forms? The University has always been a place for community. From music, theatre, fine art and more; here’s a list of U of C alumni to look out for in upcoming festivals or shows.

Thomas Thomas Band — Shannon Thomas and Thomas Englund

Thomas Thomas is a name that’s been circling the Calgary music scene for a number of years. U of C alum, Thomas Englund joined forces with U of A alum, Shannon Thomas to create a rock band that evokes nostalgia from another time. After making appearances at Sled Island and Stampede, the band has solidified their place in the local music community. With hits like “Right Place Wrong Time” and making appearances in iconic shows like Netflix’s My Life With the Walter Boys, be sure to check them out when they come to a venue near you. Songs, music videos, merchandise and concert details can be found on their website.

Full Circle Theatre — Erin Weir and Claire Bolton

Full Circle Theatre is run by Erin Weir and Clair Bolton, who both earned their BFA from the U of C. The indie-theatre company is a home-grown production company that focuses on original or reimagined works. Ranging from original comedies to gender-swapped Shakespeare iterations, Full Circle Theatre is paving the way for freshly graduated students to get their foot in the door and into the industry. Information on Full Circle Theatre can be found on their website.

Playwright and Actor — Bianca Miranda

Bianca Miranda is a Betty Award winning playwright who is a champion of uplifting POC and queer voices in the theatre industry. Miranda has written multiple plays including Kisapmata and The F Word. The F Word was produced by Downstage Theatre and Alberta Theatre Projects; following the production she embarked on a cross-city tour alongside Keisha Cheesman. Her work has also been featured as part of Lunchbox Theatre’s “Stage One Festival of New Canadian Work” and was quickly moved into production in 2024. Miranda’s an artist to look out for in YYC’s theatre scene due to her ability to capture hearts in all her projects.

For details on Miranda’s projects check out her bio on the Downstage Theatre website.

Actor — Stephanie Bessala

Stephanie Bessala is a recent U of C alum and graduated with her BFA in 2023. Since graduating she’s made waves as an up-and-coming actor in Calgary’s theatre scene. She’s been in multiple U of C productions and beyond; including Shakespeare Company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Vertigo Theatre’s The Da Vinci Code and Full Circle Theatre’s original production, Porcelain Dolls. Bessala’s range makes her an artist to keep an eye on, and if she’s making headlines in a lead role, she’s not one to miss.

Set and Lighting Designer — Cassie Holmes

Artists aren’t just limited to performers but are oftentimes the lifeblood behind a production. Cassie Holmes earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Design and Technical Theatre at U of C and has gone on to produce sets and lighting designs for many theatre companies including Vertigo Theatre and Lunchbox Theatre. An artist in her own right, she’s designed worlds that performers can play in and for audiences to enjoy. If you see Holmes’ name in a theatre program, immerse yourself in the world that she designed and learn more about her work on her website.

The U of C’s SCPA is leading the Calgary arts industry because it produces artists that are passionate about honing their craft, no matter what medium they choose to express themselves in. When the season of arts festivals comes around, be sure to check out these artists and their creations.
