Filling the gap for future dentists: Meet the Dental Society

By Anna Maxwell, September 30 2025—

For students pursuing dentistry, the University of Calgary Dental Society (UCDS) offers more than a line on a resume. It provides a community of support, mentorship and guidance through one of the most complex application processes in education.

“Our club is about connecting aspiring dentists in our community,” said Joel Riddell, a fifth-year biological sciences student and the club’s president. “Having a community to help you navigate the application process and reaffirm that this is what you want to do with your life is kind of the goal of this club, and something we strive to do every single year.”

Founded in 2015, the club has grown steadily, developing with each new group of executives. “Every year, new people bring new ideas,” said Sherri Hyunh, a fourth-year biosciences student and UCDS vice-president external. “Last year we tried a bake sale for the first time to raise awareness about dental hygiene, and we’ve also introduced junior executives and senior advisors.”

The club’s programming blends professional development with social opportunities. Each year, UCDS hosts events such as dental school information sessions, where executives break down the different requirements and application processes across schools, as well as mock interviews and a mock Dental Admission Test (DAT) combined with CASPer preparation. Socials have also previously included a soap-carving workshop and a combined movie night.

“We also want to give students more chances to socialize, not just sit and listen,” Hyunh noted.

UCDS aims to make membership accessible.

“It’s pretty easy [to join the club]. If you come to the events, we probably consider you a member. If you’d like to officially join the club and help support us, there is a $5 admission fee, which helps us do these events and hold socials like our meet-and-greet,” said Diya Athwal, a fourth-year biological sciences student and the club’s vice-president finance and administration.

One of the biggest benefits the club provides its members is not having to navigate the dental school application process alone.

“It’s a daunting process. It can be overwhelming at times, and so having a support staff to help you navigate that process is the most valuable thing our club would offer,” explained Riddell.

The club encourages students to share feedback and ideas for future programming.

“We try our best, but we don’t always know what people want,” Hyunh said. “Students can message us on Instagram or email us, and we’ll do our best to make those ideas happen.”Students interested in joining the UCDS can visit the group’s Instagram or find them at Clubs Week at table 79 on Monday and table 91 on Tuesday.
