Pack the Jack was a success for the Dinos women’s basketball team, as they not only swept their doubleheader against the Winnipeg Wesmen but also broke records and energized a packed home crowd.
The Dinos dominated from the start, showing their intentions to win. Second-year guard Christine Geraldo and fourth-year guard Milica Gajic set the tone with speed and precision. Gajic scored first, then Geraldo hit back-to-back threes. The Wesmen tried to respond, but the Dinos’ defence quickly tightened, forcing them to rely more on outside shots. As the Dinos built their lead, the Wesmen struggled to catch their breath. Fifth-year guard Amélie Collin made two three-pointers as the Dinos ended the opening quarter with a 14-point lead.
Dinos increased their intensity in the second, widening the gap. Wesmen scored the first points of the quarter, but the Dinos ensured those points had minimal impact on the overall score. Collin recorded three steals in the second quarter, bringing her total to four at that point in the game and five by the end of the night. With 253 career steals, Collin tied the program record and is on track to break the conference record.
“It feels pretty good, I won’t lie,” said Collin. “I did not know until last weekend that I could beat the record.”
Halftime arrived with the Dinos holding a 50–26 lead. As the second half began, the pace slowed and fatigue appeared to be setting in. With the Wesmen and Dinos each scoring 11 points in the third quarter, the Dinos maintained their lead, but at a slower, less intense pace.
“We didn’t come out in the second half as hard as I would have liked us to,” said head coach Sarah Besselink, reflecting on the team’s subdued energy.
Wesmen opened the fourth quarter with a solid jumper, but the Dinos quickly fell into place, tightening their defence and preparing to win their first game of the weekend.
“Every game, we aim to come out strong. We still need to tighten up defensively, but we’re all on the same page,” said Collin.
Fourth-year guard Kourney Oss made a layup, boosting the team’s confidence and showcasing her strength. Geraldo soon sank a three-pointer, nearing a game-high 19 points. Second-year forward Emma Yarwood added a jumper and free throws, while Geraldo made another layup. Gajic, ending with a late three-pointer off Oss’s assist, sealed Calgary’s offensive dominance.
“I think my point guards are doing a fantastic job. Both Chris [Geraldo] and Millie [Gajic]….They’ve really controlled the offence and they’re constantly learning and asking how they can be better,” said Besselink.
The Dinos and Wesmen kept exchanging quick bursts, but the Dinos’ early lead and their scoring depth made the outcome certain. The Dinos finished the game with five players in double figures, ending with a final score of 80–52.
A rematch took place the following day, resulting in a hard-fought 75–52 victory. The Wesmen came out strong, aiming to redeem their previous loss, taking an early 10-2 lead. The Dinos gradually increased their pressure throughout the game, with Oss leading a 16–0 run. Collin set a new program record for steals (254) while adding 21 points. Averaging 4.4 steals per game and 12 games left in the regular season, she is on pace to break the conference record (308) set by Ashley Wigg with the University of Alberta Pandas.
The Dinos wrapped up the weekend with the win, extending their season-long streak to 8–0.
