The UCalgary Fashion Network strives to create an inclusive community through the love of fashion and style

By Hannah Caparino, September 30 2025—

The UCalgary Fashion Network (UCFN) is a club that focuses on creating a network that prioritizes individual pursuits in the fashion and beauty industry. The club emphasizes inclusivity and expression through fashion and beauty, and contributes to the conversation regarding fast fashion and sustainability. The fashion network has deep roots in Calgary’s fashion and beauty community, often creating partnerships with local businesses to promote sustainable consumer choices.

Through displaying clothing and outfits that were pulled from local consignment and thrift stores, members would release issues or lookbooks that would represent people’s personality in a unique way. Not only do the issues provide fashion inspiration, but students can also read about the development of an individual’s style or articles about Calgary fashion icons and businesses. The magazine also features various takes on arts, culture and lifestyle, and how it can influence our lives and how we perceive expression. These look-books or magazine issues can be found on the UCalgary Fashion Network website where students can read about all things fashion, trends, and lifestyle.

The network also holds a fashion show in partnership with the University of Calgary’s Women’s Resource Centre. The fashion show is an event that celebrates individual expression and confidence. The show is the culmination of the executive team’s hard work and dedication in allowing U of C students to come as they are, and to break down barriers in fashion and expression. The styles that were presented were eccentric, chic and bold, with each person flaunting their own style with grace and confidence. U of C students are welcome to sit and see the members strut on the catwalk in MacEwan Hall and witness how fashion has created an inclusive community.

A market typically accompanies the fashion show where local vendors would set up stands that anyone could browse through. Vendors like “Stone and Pulp” and “Uncowardly Closet” are both Calgary-based clothing vendors that sell either handmade or second-hand products to encourage sustainable fashion practices.

Jewellery vendor, Joydrop, also partnered with the UCFN to showcase both locally made jewellery and unique pieces from all around the world. Ranging from rings to a variety of accessories, members of the fashion network showed that Joydrop has something for everyone.

The U of C community can benefit from the UCFN as they are able to foster a positive community that is incredibly supportive. With their primary goals of both informing the wider community about sustainable fashion and creating a safe space, the club targets a wide audience who can form bonds beyond the university walls.

Information about the UCFN can be found on their website or social media pages.
